Monoethylene Glycol Suppliers in Oman: Sohar Cooling Loop Guide
November 03, 2026
Chilled loops, process chillers and engine jackets in Sohar all run on a clean glycol charge, so when you compare monoethylene glycol suppliers in Oman, the real questions are grade, paperwork and delivery. Monoethylene glycol (MEG, CAS 107-21-1) is the base fluid for most industrial coolants and antifreeze. For a closed loop you typically mix it with deionised water at no less than about 25% by volume, add a suitable corrosion inhibitor, and check the mix with a refractometer. We supply MEG in 210 litre drums from our Barka warehouse to sites in Sohar and Al Batinah.
What monoethylene glycol is and which grade plants buy
MEG is a clear, colourless liquid with almost no smell. It mixes fully with water and acetone, dissolves slightly in ether, and does not mix with petroleum hydrocarbons and oils. The formula is C2H6O2, the molecular weight is about 62, and it is traded under HS code 29053100.
Industrial and antifreeze grade MEG typically has 99% min purity and about 0.2% max water. Our product record lists a minimum purity of 99.5 per cent. Glycol recovered as a by-product can carry unwanted impurities, so ask for the certificate of analysis on every batch and compare it with the limits below. You can see the drum listing on our mono ethylene glycol 210 litre drum page.

Why Sohar plants run glycol loops in a hot climate
Sohar does not freeze, yet glycol still earns its place. Process chillers in steel, aluminium, refinery and petrochemical plants often run chilled supply set below 0 °C, and plain water would freeze in the evaporator. Glycol keeps the fluid moving at those set points.
The second reason is heat. In engine and generator jackets, MEG works as an anti-boil additive as well as an antifreeze, which helps stop overheating on a 45 °C afternoon. Our engine room grade mono ethylene glycol is listed for this duty, with protection down to as low as -50 °C at high concentration.
The third reason is corrosion and bacteria. A loop kept at no less than about 25% v/v glycol is biostatic. Weaker mixes let bacteria break the fluid down, which lowers pH and speeds up corrosion of your pipework and heat exchangers.
MEG concentration, inhibitor and mixing water
Typical freeze protection for MEG in water, by volume:
- 20% MEG: about -10 °C
- 33% MEG: about -20 °C
- 50% MEG: about -40 °C
- 60% MEG: about -55 °C
Mixtures above 70 vol% MEG are not recommended. Adding more glycol than you need does not improve protection, because the freeze point curve is not linear. Extra glycol raises viscosity and pumping power and cuts heat transfer, so set the mix for your lowest chilled supply temperature plus a margin, and keep at least 25% for biostatic protection.
In service, uninhibited glycol breaks down into glycolic and formic acid, which attack metals. An inhibited charge neutralises those acids and passivates metal surfaces, so add a suitable inhibitor package when you fill the loop. If your loop contains aluminium, confirm that the inhibitor is rated for it.
Mix with deionised or distilled water. In Oman that means DM water, RO permeate or desalinated water from your plant's treatment unit. Well water and tanker water often carry calcium, magnesium, chlorides and sulphates, which form sludge and scale in a glycol loop.
MEG gives better heat transfer than monopropylene glycol (MPG), which makes it the usual choice for heavy industry in the Sohar Industrial Estate. Choose MPG where low toxicity is required, such as food, beverage and pharmaceutical plants.
Testing and maintaining a glycol cooling loop
Measure glycol concentration and freeze point with a calibrated refractometer. Test concentration, pH and clarity regularly; a monthly check on chiller loops and a check at each planned shutdown in steel, aluminium and refinery units is a sensible starting routine. On ships calling at Sohar port, the engineers can test the jacket water at the same interval as their other cooling water checks.
If the fluid fails on pH, colour or clarity, drain, flush and recharge rather than only adding inhibitor. Never mix ethylene and propylene glycol in one system, and do not top up with a glycol carrying a different inhibitor package. Do not use silicate-containing automotive antifreeze in an industrial chiller: silicates coat heat transfer surfaces, can gel, and can attack pump seals.
Storage, handling and hazards of MEG drums in Omani heat
MEG is hygroscopic and pulls moisture from the air, so keep drums tightly closed in a dry, well-ventilated place. Reseal opened drums and keep them upright. In Sohar summers, store drums under a roof and out of direct sun, not in an open yard. MEG is a combustible liquid for storage purposes, not a flammable one.
Keep it away from strong acids, strong oxidising agents, strong bases, aldehydes and aluminium. When handling, avoid contact with skin and eyes and avoid breathing vapour or mist. Provide ventilation and an eyewash station near the filling point.
MEG is harmful if swallowed (H302, Acute Tox. 4) and may cause damage to the kidneys through prolonged or repeated exposure if swallowed (H373, STOT RE 2). The body turns ethylene glycol into toxic oxalic acid, and its sweet taste draws animals to leaks. Clean up spills promptly, collect spent glycol in closed drums, and hand it to a licensed waste contractor instead of running it to drains or open ground.
Where to buy from monoethylene glycol suppliers in Oman
When a delivery arrives, check the certificate of analysis against your order: purity, water content, DEG content and colour. The liquid should be clear and colourless, and the drum seals should be intact. MEG is commonly traded in containers from 5 to 210 litres and in bulk tanker loads; our listed pack is the 210 litre drum, and you can ask about other sizes on the quote.
Sohar Chemical (RXSOL group, Oman) dispatches from our Barka warehouse, with deliveries to Sohar and Al Batinah, including plants in the Sohar Industrial Estate. Ship agents and chandlers supplying vessels at Sohar port can find MEG with our other marine stores in the deck, cabin and galley maintenance range. The same product is also listed on our Muscat Chemical site, and the 210 litre drum is also listed on our Salalah Chemical site. To build one order with inhibitor, cleaners and other plant chemicals, ask us for the full product list.

Frequently asked questions
Who supplies monoethylene glycol in Oman, and can they deliver drums to Sohar?
We supply MEG in 210 litre drums from our Barka warehouse, with deliveries to Sohar and Al Batinah. Send the quantity and delivery site and we will confirm the arrangement on the quote.
What concentration of MEG should I use in a chiller or process cooling loop?
Set it from your lowest chilled supply temperature. Typical figures are about -10 °C at 20%, about -20 °C at 33% and about -40 °C at 50% by volume. Keep at least about 25% for biostatic protection and stay below 70%.
Can I dilute ethylene glycol with tap water?
Use deionised, distilled, DM or RO water. Tap, well and tanker water add calcium, magnesium, chlorides and sulphates that form sludge and scale in the loop.
What is the difference between ethylene glycol and propylene glycol?
MEG gives better heat transfer, so heavy industry usually runs on it. MPG is chosen where low toxicity is required, such as food and pharmaceutical plants. Never mix the two in one system.
Can I use automotive antifreeze in an industrial chiller?
Not if it contains silicates. Silicates coat heat transfer surfaces, can gel and can attack pump seals. Use industrial MEG with an inhibitor package suited to your loop metals.
