October 27, 2026

Ammonia Solution Liquor in use at an industrial site in Sohar, Oman

Plants, workshops and vessels in Sohar use aqueous ammonia for cleaning, pH control and NOx reduction. They need an ammonia solution supplier in Oman who can deliver the correct grade in a practical pack. From our Barka warehouse we supply 25% liquor ammonia in HDPE drums, jerry cans, IBC tanks and road tankers. We also supply a diluted ammonia cleaning solution in bottles and an aromatic ammonia inhalant for first aid kits. Choose the 25% liquor for process work and heavy cleaning, the bottle for housekeeping and the inhalant for medical chests.

What Is Ammonia Solution (Liquor Ammonia, Ammonium Hydroxide)?

Ammonia solution is ammonia (NH3) dissolved in water. It is sold as ammonium hydroxide, ammonia water, aqua ammonia, aqueous ammonia or liquor ammonia, and all of these names describe the same product. The CAS number is 1336-21-6.

Suppliers state the strength as % NH3 because ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) does not exist as a compound that can be isolated. A drum marked 25% holds 25% ammonia by weight in water. Industrial 25% solutions are made by dissolving anhydrous ammonia in demineralised water, typically to about 24.5 to 25% NH3. Anhydrous ammonia is the raw material, and the solution is what arrives in your drum. They are separate products with separate handling rules.

The solution is strongly alkaline. Typical pH is about 11.6 for a 1 M solution and around 12 for concentrated grades. It is a clear, colourless liquid with a strong, pungent odour, and it mixes fully with water.

Strengths and Grades: Household, 25% Industrial, AR and Aromatic Inhalant

Household ammonia is typically 5 to 10% NH3 by weight. Professional and industrial cleaners use more than 10%, and the most concentrated commercial grade is about 30% (26° Baumé). For plant work, the usual trade strength is liquor ammonia 25% w/w.

  • Industrial 25% liquor ammonia. Our Ammonia Solution Liquor 25% (RXSOL-19-1526-035) is the grade for process use and heavy cleaning. You dilute it on site to the strength each job needs.
  • Diluted cleaning grade. Our Ammonia Solution Bottle (RXSOL-19-1526-001) is ammonia solution diluted for domestic use and mixed with surfactant. It removes dirt and stains in kitchens, galleys and accommodation blocks.
  • AR or laboratory grade. Lab and analytical grades typically assay 24 to 28% or 25 to 30% NH3, with very low residue after evaporation (typically ≤0.003%, or 20 ppm max). If your plant laboratory needs this grade, include the assay and residue limit in your enquiry.
  • Aromatic ammonia inhalant. Our Ammonia Inhalant Solution Aromatic (RXSOL-19-1526-220), also called aromatic ammonia spirit, is used to prevent or treat fainting. Keep it in the first aid kit, separate from cleaning stock.

Where Ammonia Solution Is Used in Sohar Plants

The Sohar industrial zone has steel, aluminium, refinery, petrochemical, power and water plants close together, and several of them have a use for aqueous ammonia.

  • Water treatment. Ammonia solution is used to produce chloramine for disinfection. In a water plant, that reaction runs inside a controlled dosing system. In a chemical store or a cleaning bucket, the same reaction gives off toxic fumes.
  • NOx reduction. 25% ammoniacal solution is used as a reducing agent for NOx emissions in incinerators, cement plants and thermal power plants. In SNCR, the reagent is injected into flue gas at about 850 to 1050 °C. In SCR, it passes over a catalyst after combustion. Aqueous ammonia needs heat to vaporise, and the injection design has to allow for this.
  • Cleaning and degreasing. Ammonia solution cleans glass, porcelain and stainless steel and removes grease. Maintenance crews in steel and aluminium plants can use it on stainless surfaces, control room glass and workshop benches.
  • Laboratory work. Plant laboratories use it for pH adjustment and analysis.
  • Other process uses. Ammonia solution also serves absorption refrigeration and alkyl amine synthesis.

Ammonia Solution for Degreasing and Cleaning

For light degreasing with the bottle grade, half fill an empty bottle with the ammonia solution, fill the other half with warm water and shake well. Apply the solution directly to the surface you want to clean. It removes grease splatter from stoves, countertops, stainless steel, tiles and similar surfaces. Do not use ammonia on marble surfaces.

For the 25% liquor, the right dilution depends on the soil, the surface and the conditions on site, so we agree a starting strength with you for each task. Test it on a small area first, keep the area well ventilated and wear the PPE listed below. For heavy oil and fuel residues in engine rooms and bilges, a purpose-built degreaser is the usual choice. Our article on degreaser applications and best practices in industry covers those jobs.

Ship Chandling at Sohar Port: Ammonia Solution and Inhalants Onboard

The IMPA marine catalogue lists ammonia solution as a standard ship-store chemical under cleaning materials and common chemicals, including an 18 kg pack. If your requisition quotes the IMPA line, send it to us with the vessel name and ETA at Sohar port, and we will confirm the closest pack from our range.

For transport and port paperwork, the product is UN 2672, ammonia solution, Class 8 (corrosive). While drums and jerry cans wait on the quay, keep them upright, closed and out of the sun.

Aromatic ammonia inhalants are typically ammonia dissolved in water and ethanol and scented with oils such as lavender or eucalyptus. They are used to revive people who have fainted. They come as small crushable ampoules (typically about 0.33 mL) or as bottled solutions. Hold the inhalant about 10 to 15 cm from the nostrils, since closer use can burn the nasal mucosa. Inhalants are not recommended for head or neck injuries because they may delay neurological assessment, and they can worsen asthma.

Packing and Storing Ammonia Solution in Oman's Heat

We supply 25% liquor ammonia in:

  • HDPE drums (100 / 190 / 210 / 220 kg net capacity)
  • HDPE jerry cans (20 / 30 / 50 kg net capacity)
  • 1000 litre IBC tank containers
  • Road tankers (8 / 9 / 10 M.T. net capacity)
  • ISO tank of 22 M.T. net capacity (exports only)

Summer heat is the main storage issue in Oman. A 25% solution typically boils at about 37.7 °C, and Sohar summer temperatures can come close to that or go above it. Warming releases ammonia gas, so pressure builds up inside a drum left in the sun. Store containers tightly sealed, away from heat and direct sunlight, in a cool, well-ventilated area.

Some safety data sheets specify storage below 25 °C in corrosion-resistant containers. They also call for local exhaust ventilation, alkali-proof equipment and handling by trained persons only. On a hot day, turn your face away and open caps slowly so that any vapour vents gently.

Safe Handling, PPE and Chemicals You Must Never Mix

Ammonia solution carries the GHS signal word Danger, with H302 (harmful if swallowed), H314 (severe skin burns and eye damage), H335 (respiratory irritation) and H410 (very toxic to aquatic life).

  • Wear chemical-resistant gloves and chemical splash goggles with a face shield. Do not wear contact lenses.
  • Work with adequate ventilation. Avoid breathing vapour or mist, because inhaled corrosives can cause lung oedema.
  • Never mix ammonia solution with bleach, chlorine-containing products or strong oxidants. This generates toxic chloramine fumes. Keep ammonia and chlorine products on separate shelves in your chemical store.
  • If there is a spill, keep the material out of drains, contain it and pump it into suitable containers for disposal.

Put an eyewash station near the dosing point and the store, and keep the safety data sheet where your crew can read it.
