It functions as an emulsifier, stabilizer and texturizer; it also is a buffering agent, and chelating agent especially for the calcium in milk products..
Its main application is as a fertilizer due to its being a good source of both nitrogen and phosphate nutrients. It is also used as a dry chemical fire extinguisher and in building materials. It is also found in science kits or crystal growing kits as emerald green, amethyst, or aquamarine crystals.
How is ammonia used? About 80% of the ammonia produced by industry is used in agriculture as fertilizer. Ammonia is also used as a refrigerant gas, for purification of water supplies, and in the manufacture of plastics, explosives, textiles, pesticides, dyes and other chemicals.
